HVMS Prevention Club

By Maggie Light

YADAPP, Youth Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Project,  is a statewide project focused on helping teens develop leadership skills and getting them involved in keeping their school safe from drugs and alcohol.  The program is designed for students at the high school level.

The Hidden Valley Middle Prevention club was formed in the fall of 2008 by our SAP coordinator, Mr. Tim Hayes.  Our club at the middle school is not an official member of YADAPP, but a step down from it.  We are doing projects at the middle school level, instead of at the high school level.  Starting the club took time; first, we had to get authorization from the school principal to start our club, and then we had to get everyone who wanted to join organized.  Mr. Hayes recruited me, my brother, and several other students to get our club started.  Our club concentrates on preventing bullying and drug and alcohol use/abuse.  The official definition of prevention is an action that stops something from happening, or an action taken to stop somebody from doing something.  That is exactly what we attempt to do in our meetings.  We try to give our peers interesting, new information to stop them from trying harmful actions, such as smoking or drinking.  It is important to have a prevention club at our middle school for many reasons.  One reason is that kids our age are going through many changes and making new friends and might not have an adult they trust to talk to.  Also, because our teachers, no matter how hard they try, are not aware of everything that goes on in our school.  Students in the club can help out the teachers by learning the signs of bullying, watching out for them, and trying to resolve them or getting an adult to help resolve them.  Students leave the handling of drug and alcohol use to the professionals at our school and in our community.  In conclusion, the prevention club at HVMS is beneficial in many ways to our school and community.
