Guiding Good Choices® Workshops
Building Strong Family Ties
The Roanoke County Prevention Council is offering workshops for parents of children in grades 3 through 8.
The sessions include:
- healthy beliefs and clear standards in the family
- strengthening parenting skills
- strengthening family communication skills
- dealing with peer pressure
- challenges of adolescence
- building protective factors
A special feature of the Guiding Good Choices® program is peer refusal skills. Refusal skills focus on ways to avoid high-risk activities under peer pressure and still maintain important friendships. Workshops are available for:
Parents Schools
Faith Based Groups Community Coalitions
Civic Organizations Health/Human Service Organizations
Cost to parents attending workshops is $40.00 paid by the first session by cash or certified check payable to Family Service of Roanoke Valley.

Bridging The Gap: Meeting Your Child's Needs
A Wraparound Services Family Forum: November 19th
Bridging the Gap is a Family Service’s Forum designed to strengthen SW Virginia’s families and communities in their efforts to meet the challenges of raising healthy, well adjusted children. Exhibitors will wrap their services around the conference participants with information and outreach. Workshops, keynote speeches and roundtables will be offered throughout the day, who will inspire, inform and equip families to become more effective self-advocates. Service providers will learn to partner better with families and with one another through collaboration and family support teams. Also: Hands on learning opportunities with Cybercafe (internet) access to using 211 as a tool for identifying relevant community resources. Our priority is participation by our clients! Please help us to encourage clients to come and learn more about what help our community can provide.
All of this: FREE of charge including lunch!
Objectives of the Family Forum:
1. To Empower Families with the Confidence, Knowledge and Skills Needed To Become Their Own Best Advocates
2. To Educate Service Providers (Community Supports) about How To Best Partner with Each Other and with Families So They Can Succeed at the Struggle of Raising Challenging Children
3. To Educate All about the Services Available for Children and Their Families in the Valley.
Who should attend: Families and caregivers raising challenging children, including those with special needs, foster children, grandparents raising grandchildren as well as educators and other community
members who provide support and services for vulnerable children and their famiies. THE FIRST 350 TO REGISTER CAN ATTEND!
