May 27th, 2010
Attendance: Arlene, Tabitha, Tim, Emily, Susan, Kathy
Most activities have wrapped up for the year. HVMS is not sending a team to YADAPP as YOVASO is free and the same week. We talked about connecting the HVMS and HVHS kids so the 8th graders would be comfortable moving up. Also talked about the stigma attached to being part of a prevention club. Not sure how to make it cool. Talked about the possibility of a summer event for the youth. Ice cream party, pizza or something.
There was no one there to update on the survey results for the letters to seniors. We also discussed the letters to senior parents that will be going out in the next week or two.
Talked about putting information for parents about hosting laws and how to handle it when your kids ask to go to a party as well. We will try for something small around graduation and will look to do this during key times like homecoming prom etc.
Discussed the June 16th event. The idea was posed to go the Barry Trent to see if we can get him to help support this through the athletic directors and coaches.
Looking at alternating meetings, meeting times and locations to try to get youth involved.
We are going to ask the SADD club at CSHS to host the first meeting of the year in September.
April 27th, 2010
Attendance: Arlene, Tabitha, Nancy, Emily, Tony, Susan, Bonnie, Jason, Kathy
CSMS – All groups (SADD, Natural Helpers, peer mediators etc) got together and collected teddy bears for global youth services day. 505 bears were donated to area Herman L Horne, Richfield, and the Rescue Mission.
CSHS – Doing prom promise 5/10-5/12 when they give out senior letters.
HVHS – SADD group is doing a prescription drug handout and doing a blood drive for Haiti as well.
There will be roving patrols for prom night and graduation night.
Town Hall Meeting Update
Talked about how well the meeting went with approximately 150 in attendance. We got great coverage for the event too. Most notable was the youth panel and the candidate input.
Only NSMS and WBHS did sticker shock on 4/24. There was great response from those groups and potential new interest from students and parents.
These letters are all done and ready to be distributed. Emily is going to cover the story and make a copy of a letter to put in the paper too. We are going to come up with 2 or 3 questions, create a survey and make stickers to put on the letters so we can evaluate the effectiveness of the letters.
YADAPP an CADCA Youth opportunities
Discussed the YADAPP for July 19th through the 22nd. Cost is $605 per team of 4 youth and 1 adult. A $25 per student non refundable deposit is due no later then June 1st. Suggested teams talk to PTA boards for help if their students can’t afford the $152.25 per student cost. Also discussed CADCA being in Arizona the next week and cost being a factor in putting together a team to go out there. Emily suggested a press release to be printed in Swo Co and So Salem for this.
Tried to brainstorm ideas for selling these tickets. We must sell 500 tickets at $6 each. Funds will be used to support youth activities like Regional and State YADAPP. Ideas included Swo Co, So Salem, Green Ridge, Starbucks, Brambleton Teen Center, Mill Mountain, Library, Kroger and Food Lion and local sports groups. We are asking prevention teams to try to sell tickets to youth and adults at the school too.
May 27th at HVMS at 11:30 pending ok from Tim.
February 23rd, 2010
Attendance: Dan, Arlene, Tabitha, Nancy, Emily, Tony, Susan, Joan, Ryan, Bonnie, Debbie, Kathy
CSMS hosted a student faculty basketball game. They raised $883 for the heart foundation and food for 2nd harvest food bank. SADD club is planning to attend YADAPP, they have 5 or 6 going at this point. Dan received a promotion and will be leaving as of April 3rd, Officer Slade will be taking his place. 8th graders would like to talk to 6th graders again this year to get them interested in SADD for next year. Sponsoring Gobal Youth Services day and Miss Virginia is going to speak to CSMS and feeders in April as well.
CSHS is going to host a pizza meeting during the summer for the rising 8th graders to get them interested in HS SADD. Doing a prescription drug workshop for YADAPP asked to come to the meeting at NSHS.
HVHS will be doing the positive social norms marketing work shop, have asked for one rep to come to a meeting at NSHS. Selling Haiti t-shirts to help Haiti. Shirt says stop the haiting on the back. Hosting Ask the Experts on 3/17.
The idea was brought up at a previous So Co CAT meeting to include a rising 6th graders piece to regional YADAPP. Because of this suggestion rising 6th graders and there parents will be asked to attend this event for the first time ever.
Discussed ways to keep the bookmark contest for 4th graders and the letters for seniors from 5th graders program going. Some ideas were to move the 5th grade letter to a 6th grade letter and handle it through the middle school. Possibly putting curriculum for these programs in video format so we don’t need so much man power. Book marks to partner with art classes if tobacco information is still being presented in the 4th grade. Concerns presented that these were programs that lasted 8 to 13 weeks that went over a lot of information and need to keep them in tact as much as possible.
Graffiti around South County and Insane Clown Pose around the schools again.
Working on next meeting date. Will advise.

Future of CAT Meetings
Discussed what we wanted the CAT meeting to be. Possibility of changing time, different locations, including youth and more adults. What we are going to try is this:
Feb. 27th we are going to get the HVMS and HVHS SADD teams together after early dismissal (1:15) at HVMS. We are then going to talk about what other groups we want to include on the CAT team, times, and what purpose the group will have. Possible purpose might be to host a MD and HS SAC meeting as other schools are currently doing and have the youth help plan this. Dan will confirm if HVMS is available for this meeting at this time.
Next we would like to coordinate a South County pot luck CAT meeting on March 18th at 7PM in the MS café (4/1 is the back up date if 3/18 isn’t available). We are going to ask the youth for their input on this meeting. Dan to confirm availability of HVMS for this event as well.
Discussed the possibility of sending out a survey to our email list to see what their interests are and why they don’t attend meetings to see if we can make this more attractive for the community. Talked about possibly making meeting invitation only meetings. Also want to involve the SOCO additional of the Roanoke Times in the 2/27 and 3/18 meetings. We are going to get youth opinion on above as well.
