Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week Announcements for the week.

Monday

The history of Red Ribbon Week

Special Agent Camarena was an 11-year veteran of the DEA assigned to the Guadalajara, Mexico, office where he was on the trail of the country’s biggest marijuana and cocaine traffickers. In 1985, he was extremely close to unlocking a multi-billion dollar drug pipeline. On February 7, 1985, he was kidnapped, brutally tortured, and murdered by Mexican drug traffickers. His tragic death opened the eyes of many Americans to the dangers of drugs and the international scope of the drug trade.

Shortly after Kiki’s death, Congressman Duncan Hunter and Kiki’s high school friend Henry Lozano launched “Camarena Clubs” in Kiki’s hometown of Calexico, California. Hundreds of club members pledged to lead drug-free lives to honor the sacrifice made by Kiki Camarena. In 1988, the National Family Partnership (NFP) coordinated the first National Red Ribbon Week with President and Mrs. Reagan serving as honorary chairpersons. The tradition has grown in communities around the country since then.

This week in honor of reb ribbon week we will be having a contest. Each day a poster will be put up in the hallways. There will be a word of the day on each poster. Collect the new word each day. On Friday during your lunch period find a person with a 'Nuff Said t-shirt on and tell them the phrase of the week and you will get a prize and be put into a drawing for one of 5 $10 gift certificates to Walmart.

Tuesday

Alcohol only can kill you. Each year approximately 1700 young lives are lost to binge drinking. When too much alcohol is consumed in a short period of time the body can not process it fast enough and it can shut down the heart and the brain and, if the individual doesn't get treatment, can lead to death. How much is too much? That is different for every individual and can vary every time based on several different facts. It's kind of like Russian Roulette, and it's a chance that is not worth taking.

Don't forget to look for the poster of the day and keep trace of your clues!!

Wednesday

There are thousands of good medications which are safe and effective, and new drugs come on the market every day. We are being bombarded with advertisements about the benefits of these drugs. But don't be fooled: legal prescription drugs are not something to fool around with. Neither are some over-the-counter medications like cough syrup. Just because a doctor prescribed them to a relative or a friend doesn't make them safe for you. Just because something comes from a drug store doesn't make it safe to abuse.

Don't forget to look for the poster of the day and keep trace of your clues!!

Thursday

Today lets talk about cell phone and internet safety for a minute. You need to know that if you recieve and don't delete an inappropriate picture of anyone under the age of 18 (no matter how old you are) you are in possision of child pornography. If you forward that picture to ANY you have then distributed child pornography. Both of these are class 5 felonies and both are punisable by time in jail (5 to 20 years) and if convicted, you will be a registered sex offender for the rest of your life. Be smart and do get involved in this!!

Don't forget to look for the poster of the day and keep trace of your clues!!

Friday

As we wrap up red ribbon week I will leave you with this thought. Whether it's driving without your seat belt, drinking, doing drugs or forwarding inappropriate pictures it's illegal. It doesn't matter if you agree with the laws or not, if you get caught, there will be consequences for your actions. You need to be sure that you are ready to face these consequences BEFORE you make a bad choice. One bad decision could change the rest of your life forever.

Make sure to find the last poster and bring all your clues to one of the people in the lunch room to collect your price and get in the drawing. Good luck to you all!!
