Kendall gave an update as to what she learned at the convention she attended in DC last week. Next month we are going to take the Strategic Prevention Framework process that she was taught and use it to identify the next project we want to take on.
We moved the talent show to February 26th due to weather. We will start practices on the 26th at 5:00PM to do sound checks. We will also have one practice on 2/24 for anyone that can make it from 3:30 to 5:30 in the forum.
We are doing a test texting right now but we would like to do text polling at the show and ask 4 prevention related questions.
We have more then half of our super hero’s identified and they are working on a skit.
Seven of our youth went to North Cross on January 28th and presented to approximately 300 students and parents there. Feedback was positive and we have learned even more on how to improve for the future. One thing is to shut down bad questions quicker. We were looking to see when we can set dates for Fort Lewis, Glenvar Elem. 5th graders, Glen Cove and Mason’s Cove. There is a survey that has been sent to North Cross to see if we can get some more feedback from them.
Regional YADAPP is March 27th at Northside HS. Mandy has agreed to head up work on the Snitching VS Helping workshop for the presentation. Kendall will be heading up the Social networking workshop. Need to work on these next month.
The next meeting will be March 16 from 10 AM to 11 AM in the forum.

The Glenvar Community Action Team presented prevention information on January 28 at North Cross school where the youth presented to approximately 300 youth and adults from 6th grade to 9th grade about the risky behaviors that youth face today and why they choose to make healthy choices.

Update. We were told that 4or 5 kids from Glenvar had winning entries for the book mark contest. Winners will be announced on 12/18.
While the elementary presentation was not well attended the results were still positive. The elementary school has asked that the students come back in the spring and talk with the rising 6th grade classes. Also Fort Lewis has asked for this presentation to come to their school in the spring and North Cross school is having the group present to their 5th through 8th graders on January 28th.

The youth from the Glenvar Community Action Team met this fall and decided that they would like to put together a presentation to share with youth and parents in the 4th and 5th grades as they start to prepare to enter middle school. Red Ribbon Week Oct 26th through Oct 30th
The middle school did a pledge drive in the cafeteria and gave out stickers, they also decorated. The HS read daily messages and had a poster contest. The posters were designed by students in the graphic design class and each day there was a new poster with a new word on it. At the end of the week the students that could identify the phrase got a pop and went into a drawing for a $10 gift card at Walmart.
A reminder was given that the book mark contest ends the next day. Glenvar ended up turning in 33 entries for 10 reasons to be a teen now and a parent later.
The outline for the presentation was reviewed and the finishing touches were added to the power point for next Tuesdays presentation.
The topics that will be reviewed are:
To parents: Things you need to look for, get involved, be parents not friends, be rolemodels, parents need to know other parents
Internet safety – Cell phone safety. Parents don’t understand the power they are giving to their kids. Need to have rules and boundaries, explain consequences Ok to remove the ability to send picture and or text messages.
Why We Don’t – The students will explain things in their lives that help them make good choices.
Relationships – Picking who to be friends with. Discuss 3 schools merging together, what makes a good friend/bad friend
Refusal Skills – How to say no and feel good about it
Human Sculpture activity
End with student panel for elementary students and parents to ask questions of.
The date for the HS/MS PTA meeting has been set for 2/22 on the high school auditorium. Students identified that they would like the YOVASO group to do their dance again this year.
The students definitely want to put together another talent show however they want to do it sooner in the year. The auditorium has been reserved for February 4 (for rehearsal) and Friday 2/5 for the show so lets be thinking of ways to top lasts years show! We are going to check with the National Honor Society, YOVASO and some other groups to see if they would like to do a bake sale during intermission.
Glenvar has decided to invite youth from YADAPP to come sing and dance in the lobby before the show and to join in the closing singing Lean On Me.
Next Meeting
The next meeting will be December 15th at 11:30 in the Forum. Bring your lunch and if you want to a goody to share.
September 15, 2009
Attendance: Kenna, Brittany, Kendall, Samantha, Delali, Jacob, Devin, Mandy, Hannah, Evan, Tucker, Matt, Levi, Mileena, Kambrie, Sherry, Nancy, Kaleb, Tabitha
There were lots of new faces at this first meeting of the 2009-2010 year. There was a brief introduction as to what the Roanoke County Prevention Council is and does in the community and that the work that they do is funded from the Drug Free Communities Grant directly from the White House. The students identified the potential problems that they see this year as prescriptions drugs, easy of access to alcohol (fake ids), alcohol and pot. They felt that the wave of teen pregnancies might be past us now.
Students have been given the opportunity to be a youth representative on the board of the Roanoke County Prevention Council if they choose. They would share idea’s and updates about what is happening at Glenvar.
The three students that went to YADAPP (Samantha, Kendall and Tucker) gave an update about their week at Longwood University at the state YADAPP (Youth Alcohol and Drug Addiction Prevention Project). They had a great time and want to try to put together more teams for next year so more students can experience the fun. They also talked about the STAN plan (student’s take action now). They wanted to try to get a speaker to the school. They wanted to get one of the speakers that was at the state YADAPP conference but we don’t have the funds for that so we are going to try to tie in a local speaker into Red Ribbon Week.
We discussed the dress sale happening this weekend to benefit the After Prom party at the school. Any student from Glenvar that brings a dress will be charged $5. If they let someone know that they are from Glenvar that money will come right back to the school to support our After Prom party.
The middle school has come up with a great game plan for the middle school with the theme of WAIT. The students from the coalition wanted to stick with the plan they had discussed last year for the high school with the Nuff Said theme.
We are working on getting a speaker (perhaps Josh Hills family from Patrick County who’s son was crippled by a drunk teenager). Mr. Hafey will allow us to have a speaker on Wednesday or Thursday of Red Ribbon Week as long as he approves it ahead of time.
We are also working on a poster contest. Each day of the week will reveal a different word of the phrase “Red Ribbon Week, Nuff Said”. On Friday the students will wear their Nuff Said t-shirts and will either hand out prizes for people that ID the phrase or enter then in a chance to win a cash prize.
The would also like to put red ribbons on all the cars in the parking lot to remind people not to drink and drive.
The high school and middle school PTA are interested in us doing another youth presentation like we did last year. The students agreed that they would like to do this. I am currently working with Mr. Hafey and Ms. Myers to secure a date for this event.
The students discussed doing a presentation to the elementary schools as well. I contacted Glenvar Elementary School and they are thrilled to have us. They have asked us to come on November 17th at 7:00PM to do a presentation for 4th and 5th grade parents. The students will put together a presentation that addresses texting and cell phone use, internet and social visiting sites like MySpace and will address communication and making smart choices. They will present for approximately 30 minutes and will then open up the floor for questions from students and parents.
The students would like to come up with a video about the consequences of drinking and driving. A possible idea was to show someone drinking and then have the spin the wheel with difference possible consequences. Whatever the wheel lands on would then be acted out. Students are going to put together ideas about possible consequences and Mandy and Hannah are going to work on putting together a script for the video with Mr. Franco (hopefully). Idea’s are to be turned in by 9/23.
The coalition is going to submit an entry into the WDBJ7/It’s My Prom Banner contest. Idea’s need to be submitted to Mrs. Gearheart by 9/23 then she is going to approach the graphic design class to see if they will design it.
The students definitely want to put together another talent show however they want to do it sooner in the year. The auditorium has been reserved for February 4 (for rehearsal) and Friday 2/5 for the show so lets be thinking of ways to top lasts years show!
The next meeting will be October 13th at 10:00AM in the forum. We will be working on Red Ribbon Week things as well as putting together the presentation for the elementary school. We are going to schedule our November meeting for an evening so parents and community members that work during the day can join us.
