Who We Are

The Roanoke County Prevention Council is a group of parents, youth, school, business, faith, and other community leaders who formed a partnership in March 2001 to foster the healthy development of Roanoke County's youth.

What We Do

Utilizing the Strategic Planning Framework© planning process, the Council provides information on the risks and challenges facing Roanoke County families and brings community members together who have a stake in a healthy futures for our youth.

Our Goals

The Roanoke County Prevention Council seeks to prevent alcohol use, drug use, and other high risk behaviors by:

  • Educating the community about the risks facing youth and families
  • Strengthening families by providing education and parenting classes of pre-teens to encourage family communication about the risks of drug and alcohol use and to increase family supervision of youth
  • Promoting coordination and partnership between community organizations serving youth.
  • Strengthening our community by increasing the neighborhood attachment of families an youth who move in and around Roanoke county. Neighborhood connection and networking are major factors in preventing youth high risk behavior.
  • Providing more opportunities for positive youth involvement and recognition in our community.

Our Funding

The Roanoke County Prevention Council receives the majority of its funding from the Drug Free Communities Grant [DFCG] administered by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

How you can get involved

Community Prevention Coalitions

Four Community Prevention Coalitions have been established in Roanoke County to involve parents, youth, school, business, faith, and other community leaders in local strategies that provide youth with safe and healthy neighborhoods. Coalitions include North County, South County, East County, and Glenvar.

Guiding Good Choices Parenting Classes

The Council offers "Guiding Good Choices" a five session class for parents of 9-14 year olds. This class is proven to help reduce high risk youth behaviors and provide ideas to increase communication within the family. For more information go to Parent Connection Page.

Youth Leadership

The Council supports training and formation of Youth Leadership teams to empower youth and to promote leadership skills that prevent under age drinking and other high risk youth behavior. For more information go to Youth Leadership Opportunities.

Regional Prevention Conference

Each fall, the Council hosts a regional Prevention First conference that brings national experts together with individuals in the Roanoke Valley who are committed to promoting the healthy development of our youth. The conference provides a unique opportunity for parent, professionals, youth and community leaders to learn about nation trends and organize together for community based action.
